CHAPTER 11

Dealing

Smoking in the secluded corner of the razor wire fenced-in field of dirt and weeds, he looked out toward the forest. With his thoughts distracting him, Frank failed to notice the hard footsteps and heavy breathing closing in from behind.

“Hey, ya brings more with ya?”

“Sure,” said a startled Frank, turning around and handing Demp an opened pack of cigarettes.

“Thanks, man.”

Demp pulled out a cigarette, handed the pack back and lit the cigarette with his book of matches. “So I did as ya asks, and ya know if it was for anyone else I wouldn’t be doin’ it, right?” Frank nodded. “So I calls ‘im, and (Can ya believe the guy?) ‘e’s gots the nerve ta complain abouts the long-distance charges. So, I tells ‘im if the Headless gots a problem with me callin’ and they’s gots a problem with givin’ me the real scoop, cause I knows they don’t just erase money owed to ‘em, then they can looks for someone else ta do their dirty work in here. Let me tell ya that got ‘is attention all right. I could hear Snap gettin’ all red and everythin’. So, ‘e starts back-pedalin’, tellin’ me how much they needs me and ‘e’ll tell me whats I wants ta know. So, I asks ‘im if they found yer hidden stash or what, and like ya asks, I tells ‘im it’s just between ‘im and me. Ya know, I thoughts fer sure that’s whats it was cause ‘e was all silent for a sec. Then ‘e spills the beans and tells me they’re leavin’ ya alones cause they got yer boy sellin’ weed ta pays back the debt.”

“He’s selling for them?” Frank asked, dropping his half-smoked cigarette.

“Yup. Ya gots a good boy there, Frank, a good boy. Don’t knows if my kids would do the same. They’d prob’ly keep the cash and let me gets a hell of a bruisin’, or worser.”

Frank forced a smile and handed a pack of unopened cigarettes to Demp, who placed it in his shirt pocket.

“Thanks, Demp. That’s...that’s great news. I knew I could count on Blue. Let’s celebrate. Let’s go down to the kitchen and trade a few packs to Hodge for some of his hooch.”

“Yeah, good idear. Ya know, I thinks when Hodge gets out, ‘e should probably starts a business with ‘is shit. Hodge’s Hooch —that name’ll sells ‘er, eh? Hey, where’s ya gettin’ all the money for the smokes? I thought ya had nothin’.”

“Not sure a hundred percent. The money just keeps showing up in my store account.”

“Well, I wishes I hads that there problem. My own cigarette fairy,” laughed Demp as he followed behind Frank.

**

Making the best of a bad situation while still stinging from the beating and stinging even more from the loss of fifty joints, each morning of that fourth week of school Blue took the orders and immediately at lunch distributed his product, forcing him to arm himself with an excuse when he was consistently ten minutes late meeting up with Karen.
